In addition to being based on the phenomenon of piezoelectricity, all these applications also involve the propagation of ultrasonic waves: either measured if the energy conversion is from mechanical to electrical, this is the direct piezoelectric effect; or produced if the energy conversion is from electrical to mechanical, this is the reverse piezoelectric effect. These ultrasound waves pass through fluid media (air, water, oils, etc.) or solid materials (metals, plastics, etc.), and are reflected or transmitted at the interfaces.
